Poonam Mahajan is a Member of Parliament from Mumbai’s North Central Constituency, She is appointed as President of the Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha and the President of the Basketball Federation of India.

She epitomizes the progressive Indian woman of the 21st century. She has been described by many as dynamic, astute, passionate, hard working and dedicated. Striking a sound balance between her role as a Member of Parliament and a BJP office bearer, her work with NGOs and taking care of her family is really appreciable.

Throughout her election campaign, Ms. Mahajan spelt out her mantra of ‘Public-Politician’ partnership and post her victory, she has steadily worked with the public in solving problems pertaining to her constituency and the country at large.

Her core areas of focus include- Urban Infrastructure, Safety and Empowerment of Women and Environment as well as Animal Protection.

Ms. Mahajan has, through various interventions in Parliament as well as through her interaction with the Government, pushed for renewed importance for the development of Mumbai.

She has been at the forefront of making the city of dreams-Mumbai an International Financial Services Centre, with a first of its kind event – ‘Mumbai Next’ followed by setting up task force for the implementation of Mumbai as an IFSC.

Ms. Mahajan is also a member of the CM’s war room that overlooks marque projects of the Government of Maharashtra. She has also served as a voice for increased Union budgetary allocation for the city of Mumbai, particular for big infrastructure projects in the city.

Ms. Mahajan has raised several issues in Parliament including provision of free legal aid, need to expand work of national translation mission, community based programs for malnutrition and atrocities against women and children among other things. She has specifically raised issues relating to Mumbai such as the issue of rehabilitation of slum dwellers living on airport land, rejuvenation of Mithi river as well as issues relating to Mumbai’s suburban rail.

Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) is a scheme formulated by Government of India through which each Member of Parliament has the choice to suggest to the Head of the District works to be taken up in his/her constituency. Each MP is given a budget of 5 crore annually, this is called the MPLAD fund. Ms. Mahajan has already recommended works amounting to 4.03 crores and a sum of 2.49 crore has been released so far. Works that have been recommended include construction of toilets for women, shelters on walkways, schools and libraries.

Akin to her father who shared the same sense of empathy towards those less fortunate she credits her commitment to working with NGOs. Ms. Mahajan has been actively involved in social work through NGOs like Pramod Mahajan Pratishthan and Tapasvi Public Charitable Trust.

Her deep interest in environmental issues is apparent in her work with People for Animals Foundation, where she is a trustee. Being a lover of nature and animals, Ms. Mahajan has raised many issues relating to the protection of animals including ban on import of rabbit fur, retirement homes for dogs and horses in army and police forces and banning the entry of elephants in Municipal areas among others. She has moved the state government to allot land for a first of its kind animal hospital in Mumbai.

Ms. Mahajan is part of the Parliamentary standing committee on Urban Development, part of the consultative committee on finance and corporate affairs (where she raised her views on GST and Jan Suraksha Yojana), and a member of the committee of private member bills and resolutions. Apart from which, She is also on the board of NIFT directors and is the President of the Maharashtra State Basketball Association.

Ms. Mahajan also successfully completed a leadership course in Georgetown University in 2015.
